G.rizo (born Ihu Anyanwu) is a Nigerian-American singer, producer, DJ, based in Vienna, Austria.
She has been involved in the electronic music scene since 2001. First as a DJ in New York City, making parties such as: La Boum, Repellent Festival, LHS, and Start It Up, then as a singer and since 2010, as a producer. Her first single, was the dub track - “Je Me Mentis” released in 2003 on Codek Records. As a black female in dance music, with a glamorous punk-funk edge, early comparisons were made to the disco/new-wave icon - Grace Jones.
By 2006 she released a single on DJ Hell’s Gigolo Records with the sexy electro funk track “Eye Wanna C U.” The attention the release attracted and opportunities offered in Europe at that time led G.rizo to move to Vienna, setting it up as a musical “home-base.”
Not limited by one sound, and having a natural curiosity about all forms of electronic music, for the next few years G.rizo’s vocals would feature on tracks by producers in various genres - from disco, dub, house, electro and techno - such as In Flagranti, Patrick Pulsinger, Alexander Robotik, Donovans, Maximilian Skiba, Dubblestandart, Disco Doubles, Gerhard Potuznik, I-Wolf, Electronicat and others. There is a ton of unreleased collabos in hard drives and cdrs still tucked away.
Since 2010, G.rizo has been releasing her music on her own imprint Hezekina Pollutina. The debut single - “Boys” continued in the electro funk vein, with a superb remix by the electro funk master Egyptian Lover. Since then, there has been “Autonomy,” and the “Active Methods EP.” In addition, Hezekina Pollutina has released non-G.rizo material including “Those Were The Days” by Kyle & The Effusions (a funky cover of the Gene Raskin classic, produced by DJ Ulysses & DJ Unknown, includes a Legowelt remix) and “Crude Vacation EP” by Buenoventura (a.k.a. Bernhard Hammer, a member of Elektro Guzzi). G.rizo has also stayed active on the party side, organizing events like Art Klub, La Vielle Ecole and Hezekina Pollutina label nights.
Live shows are where G.rizo shines - exuding pure visceral energy. All of the glam gets sullied by some good old sweat and a raw, soulful delivery. She will go from crooning to rapping in a minute, veering through different funk-based prisms. And for the last few years, she has progressed musically, incorporating live instrument playing into her show, playing her laptop and keyboards. G.rizo also occasionally performs live in a band formation, with a loose collective of members that have included at various times: Dominik Traun (synths), Jakob Schenidewind (bass), Sixtus Preiss (drums), Derek Roberts (vocals) and Martin Dibek (laptop & effects).
These days G.rizo has a secret day job, but when opportunity calls you would find her doing what she loves to do best, which is making and spreading music!
